We are all aware of the fairly common medical condition that is diabetes, aren’t we? Caused by an increase in blood sugar levels, Diabetes prevents the body from efficiently using and storing sugar causing an unhealthy surplus of sugar in the blood stream which could damage blood vessels and cause havoc in various parts of the body..
Especially the eyes and our visual system!
This perfectly bleeds into the condition of Diabetic Retinopathy, which causes progressive damage to the retina, a light-sensitive tissue which is located at the back of our eyes. If left untreated, Diabetic Retinopathy can eventually cause blindness. Although proper monitoring and treatment can halt the progression of the disease, it is still one of the most common causes of blindness in India.
Symptoms Of Diabetic Retinopathy
Diabetic Retinopathy attacks our visual system by progressively damaging the blood vessels in the retina, at the back of our eyes. Consequently, the blood and essential fluids in the vessels begin to leak out, which in turn causes a swelling in the retina tissue, hampering your ability to focus causing vision loss, which if left untreated can cause blindness. Retinopathy affects both the eyes and usually doesn’t show any signs in its early stages. Hence, doing regular eye exams for anyone with diabetes is extremely essential. The longer someone has diabetes, the greater the odds of that individual having a certain degree of diabetic retinopathy.
