What to Expect Before and After LASIK
LASIK also known as laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis is a refractive surgery that corrects the different types of vision problems faced by individuals such as myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism, etc. In most cases today, LASIK surgery is seen as the most ideal way to get permanently rid of wearing glasses and lenses. Of all the refractive surgeries that exist, LASIK is seen as the most popular form of surgery with a remarkable 96% success rate.
A refractive surgery is meant to rectify the errors in one’s eye by reshaping the cornea to enable the light to properly enter the eye and ensure the light focuses on the retina. Patients who have undergone LASIK surgeries have testified it to be a painless procedure that gets completed in a matter of 15 minutes.
The goal of LASIK surgery differs depending on the problem area of the cornea. For example; for a nearsighted individual, the laser flattens the cornea with the removal of bits of tissue, for a farsighted individual, the laser steepens the curve of the cornea and for an individual suffering from astigmatism, the laser smoothens the irregular cornea into shape.
Before a LASIK surgery can take place, an eye examination is vital which is evaluated by the eye doctor. On understanding the shape, size and thickness, the ophthalmologist suggests the appropriate eye procedure. The different types of LASIK are
Wavefront-guided LASIK – an updated and advanced form of LASIK.
PRK (photorefractive keratectomy)–the first successful vision correction procedure to change the curvature of the cornea.
LASEK (laser epithelial keratomileusis) – similar to PRK yet in certain ways helps the eye heal faster.
The benefits of doing a laser eye surgery are numerous especially when looking for a long term solution. In most cases, people are gifted with a 20/20 vision for life and don’t need to depend on glasses or contact lenses to see well. LASIK is a popular surgery not only because of its many advantages but also helps improve the quality of life.
At the end of the LASIK eye surgery, the eye doctor examines the eye again to be assured of its health. The recovery period following the surgery is not more than a day. However, straining the eye by driving, cooking, etc must be avoided. A little rest for a lifetime without hassle. Consult your eye surgeon today and know more of how eligible you are for a LASIK surgery.
Lasik uses a laser to change the shape of the cornea.
In the myopic eye, the image does not reach the back part of the eye (the retina) as the cornea and lens are too curved and focus the image to a point in front of the retina and the image seen is blurred.
Lasik eye surgery procedure involves slight flattening of the cornea which is the curved rounded front surface of the eye; the image is then clearly focused on the retina.
In the hyperopic eye the cornea and lens are too flat and focus the image to a point behind the retina; the image then seen is blurred. The muscles controlling the lens can overcome some degree of hyperopia but weaken with age. This is why many hyperopic cases begin to require distance and near glasses after the age of 30.
The vision after laser correction with Lasik, the cornea is slightly more curved; the image is then clearly focused on the retina. The result is that the hyperopic patient can see clearly for distance after sucessfully undergoing the lasik eye surgery treatment.
In astigmatism, the eye is oval like a bead, and not spherical. The image is formed at two different points inside the eye. This means that images of different orientations are focused at different parts of the eye and that the image on the retina is blurred.
In the treatment of astigmatism, irregularities in the shape of the cornea are smoothened to even out the focusing power.

Since no stitches or bandages are involved in Lasik eye surgery, post-operative recovery is fast and without any complications. Mild tearing and eye irritation due to pollutants may be experienced for a few months.
Lasik surgeries are fast and before you know it, it will be over. Within 10-15 minutes you will have a lifetime of clear vision.
Lasik surgery is a permanent correction of impaired vision and takes away the dependence on eye wear. In most cases, there is no need for any follow-up procedures.
No more worrying about carrying your lens case or bothering about the safety of your glasses while you sleep or travel. Say hello to a carefree life with 100% clarity in vision .
Modern surgical techniques with advances in technology ensure predictable outcomes with minimal amount of risks.
Surveys carried out on people who have undergone Lasik surgery show that 98% of the patients were completely satisfied with their corrected vision.
For most patients both eyes are treated in same sitting; the procedure may last for 10 to 15 minutes
No. Surgery is carried out after putting anesthetic drops. Some patients might feel pressure sensation for a few minutes
You can resume your activities in 3-4 days. Tough water sports or swimming should be avoided for at least 2-3 months.
99% patients do not require any further procedure. In a few patients, ‘enhancement’ treatment might be required to achieve optimum vision.
Yes, however you will need reading glasses once you reach presbyopia age - around 40 years
Lasik is one of the safest surgeries in the human body, however as with any medical procedures there are certain risks involved which a candidate should understand and accept before surgery. Please make sure you have discussed your case in detail with us at AAYUSH LASIK CENTRE and understood all aspects of the procedure.
When it comes to laser vision correction, safety of our patients is paramount. Not only must the health of the eyes and the patient be considered, but some critical standards of eligibility must be met. Testing of the eyes with scans and devices not normally used in routine eye exams help to include or exclude persons seeking laser eye surgery to make it the safest possible choice for each patient. Since laser vision correction is done on the cornea, the health and integrity of that part of the eye is critical for safe and predictable outcomes.
Previously, doctors only had scans such as corneal topography as a method of measuring elevations, irregularities and curvature of the cornea. These topography scans are capable of showing possible problem areas, but are limited to a view of the front surface of the cornea only. Subtle abnormalities of the back, or posterior surface of the cornea are impossible to measure with conventional instruments. These subtle abnormalities of the back side of the cornea are often responsible for unpredictable and sometimes very poor visual outcomes after laser eye surgery.
At Aayush Lasik Centre, we carry out a Pentacam scan for all patients after their initial consultation. The Pentacam, the ultimate diagnostic tool for laser vision correction surgeons is a comprehensive scanner that provides critical data for planning of the treatment.
The Pentacam images the anterior segment of the eye by a rotating Scheimpflug camera measurement. This rotating process supplies pictures in three dimensions. The centre of the cornea is measured very precisely because of this rotational imaging process. The measurement process lasts less than two seconds, and minute eye movements are captured and corrected simultaneously. By measuring 25,000 true elevation points, precise representation, repeatability and analysis are guaranteed.
The Pentacam provides 3-dimensional chamber analysis of the complete anterior segment of the eye, corneal topography of both the front and the back of the cornea, thickness measurements across the entire diameter of cornea. It also can clearly detect corneal disorders such as Keratoconus, Pellucid degeneration and corneal ecstasia where laser vision correction is sometimes not appropriate.
The Pentacam is the first instrument that provides a truly accurate measure of both the front and back surfaces of the cornea. At Aayush Lasik Centre, we use the Pentacam (Wavelight Oculyer) extensively for planning and screening laser vision correction patients.
